Floyd Co. Supervisors Approve $10,000 to Bump Up Pay for Daycare Staff

Childcare workers in Floyd County could see a wage increase after the Board of Supervisors approved a Memorandum of Understanding to commit $10,000 towards a pilot program, spearheaded by the Charles City Area Development Corporation (CCADC).

Supervisor Gloria Carr brought the measure before the Board last month after CCADC CEO Tim Fox had secured almost $70,000 through Early Childhood Iowa (ECI) for a Wage Enhancement Program in the county.

While Carr previously cited the shortage of workers at TLC in Charles City, preventing the center from filling over two dozen childcare slots, she told fellow supervisors Boyd Campbell and Frank Rottinghaus during their meeting Tuesday (03.10) that the wage enhancement effort could help the county as a whole.

Carr said TLC’s starting wage of $9 an hour is much lower than the rate made possible by the Wage Enhancement Program in Mitchell County.

To help improve the childcare wages in Floyd County, Carr said CCADC’s Fox is actively looking for more financial contributors.

Due to her employment with ECI, Carr abstained from voting on the measure, with Rottinghaus and Campbell voting in favor of the County’s contribution of $10,000 in “seed money” for the Wage Enhancement Program, with funds coming out of the current fiscal year budget.
