Controlled Burns Require Planning, Proper Supplies, Manpower

Red Flag Warnings were issued Tuesday in north and northeast Iowa due to dry conditions presenting an increased alert of fire danger. Thus, outdoor burning was highly discouraged. The extreme risk conditions have since passed, but any outdoor burning still requires proper preparation.

New Hampton Fire Chief Toby Schwickerath says tools including rakes and shovels as well as a water supply are obvious necessities, but there are several other factors to consider before lighting the fuse.

Schwickerath also reminds citizens that small fires like fire pits also require proper attention.

As for controlled burns, Schwickerath also advises calling law enforcement dispatch to let officials know when and where your fire is located. Then, if a passerby sees the fire and reports it, fire departments can save time and resources by not responding to a controlled burn they already know about.

Schwickerath also notes that New Hampton firefighters can assist with controlled burns for a donation to the department.
