USDA Farm Diesel Relief Payments Expected After November Election

Farmers facing skyrocketing diesel costs will likely have to wait until after the November election for federal relief.

The USDA’s $8 Billion Harvest Fuel Relief Program was designed to help agricultural producers manage heavy fuel expenses during this critical harvest season. However, USDA Undersecretary Richard Fordyce indicated that payments may not roll out until closer to the end of the year, with no official distribution schedule set.

Fuel is one of the largest operating expenses for farmers, especially right now as combines, tractors, and transport trucks run around the clock. The USDA estimates agricultural fuel costs will jump by nearly five billion dollars compared to last year. While this program will add to already record-high federal farm support in 2026, the delayed timeline leaves producers paying for immediate harvest expenses entirely out of pocket.
