USDA Highlights Funding for Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah

U.S. Department of Agriculture Under Secretary for Rural Development Glen R. Smith toured Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah Sunday (Oct. 25) to highlight USDA support for rural healthcare.
WinnMed received a Rural Development grant for $700,000 from the agency’s Community Facilities Direct Loan and Grant Program. The hospital utilized funding to install a surgical robot, modernize the quality of care, and help reduce the average length of stay for an inpatient procedure. The equipment will increase facility capacity, promote workforce recruitment, and retain surgeons, thus improving healthcare for residents of Winneshiek County and surrounding rural areas.
Smith said, “Rural communities deserve modern healthcare facilities and equipment so residents can receive the safe, high‑quality care they depend on.“
Smith was joined in Decorah by U.S. Congresswoman Ashley Hinson, USDA Rural Development Iowa State Director Mike Sexton, and hospital leaders.
Sexton added, “Rural Iowa communities need modern infrastructure to offer individuals and families a place where they can live, grow, and thrive.”
