Iowa Severe Weather Awareness Week 2026-Tornado Safety

The Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM) and the National Weather Service (NWS) have joined together to promote Severe Weather Awareness Week through this Friday (03.27).

Floyd County Emergency Management Agency Director Jason Webster says Tuesday’s (03.24) focus is on Tornado Safety.

Wednesday’s (03.25) safety focus is on Preparedness, which includes the State Wide Tornado Drill at 10 am. Thursday’s (03.26) focus is Hail and Wind Safety, and Friday (03.27) wraps up with Flood Safety.

This year’s theme for Severe Weather Awareness Week is ‘Are You Ready?’

One way Webster encourages being ready is to have multiple avenues to receive severe weather information, including Alert Iowa, which can be customized to your specific area, even if your location changes, such as if you’re camping..
