Joseph Edward Bouska, age 90, Charles City

Joseph Edward Bouska, age 90, passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 3, 2026, at 9th Street Chautauqua in Charles City.

A funeral service for Joe Bouska will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City with Reverend Tom Heathershaw officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 8, 2026, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City, beginning with a Rosary at 4:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before the service at the church on Tuesday.

Joe was born on January 23, 1936, in Waucoma, Iowa, to Julius “Mike” and Mayme Bouska. He was the ninth of eleven children born to the family.

Joe dedicated much of his life to farming, a profession he truly loved, and farmed for more than 25 years. Alongside farming, he also worked at White Farm until the company closed. A devoted member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Joe’s Catholic faith was deeply important to him throughout his life.

Joe enjoyed the simple pleasures in life – farming, playing cards, and following his favorite sports teams. He was a loyal fan of the Minnesota Twins and the Iowa Hawkeyes, especially women’s basketball. He also loved a good ice cream sundae. You could often find Joe watching Gunsmoke or televised church services, unless a sporting event was on TV. He especially enjoyed listening to and watching sports whenever he could.

On May 21, 1960, Joe was united in marriage to Norma Jean “Jeannie” Smith. Together they raised three children: daughter, Jacqueline “Jackie” Jenkins and two sons, Randy and Steven. Jeannie passed away in 2001. In 2003, Joe married Rose Smith, and they remained together until her passing in 2014.

Joe faced many health challenges during the last few years of his life. After breaking his first hip in 2023, he moved to Apple Valley Assisted Living, where he was very happy. Following a second hip fracture in 2024, he was unable to return to assisted living and spent the last year and a half of his life at 9th Street Chautauqua. There, he enjoyed watching the birds and squirrels outside his window and jokingly giving the staff a hard time, something they came to know and love him for.

Joe is survived by his children: Jackie (Fred) Jenkins, Randy (Tina) Bouska, and Steven (Amy) Bouska; special friend, Shari Schmitt; sisters, Vera Rimrodt and Irma (Bob) Kime; as well as several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and their spouses.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jeannie; second wife, Rose; his parents; brothers, John, Cliff, Verne, Jim, and Cletus; and sisters, Margaret Diebler, Arlene Vrzak, and Donna Hrdlicka.

Joe will be remembered for his strong faith, love of family, sense of humor, and appreciation for life’s simple joys.
