McQuillen named shared superintendent for Osage, Riceville school districts

OSAGE, IOWA — The Osage Community School District and Riceville Community School District have selected Andy McQuillen as their next shared superintendent, officials announced this week.
McQuillen was chosen following a competitive search process that concluded April 6, when four finalists interviewed with parents, community members, staff and administrators from both districts. Candidates also toured school facilities and the surrounding communities and met with both school boards.
McQuillen will officially begin his duties July 1, 2026.
Osage School Board President Rick Sletten said the districts benefited from a strong pool of applicants.
“We were lucky to have a quality pool of candidates for the position of superintendent at both Osage and Riceville, and we are very happy to welcome Andy to the team,” Sletten said.
Riceville School Board President Kyle Guertin echoed that sentiment, highlighting McQuillen’s experience and leadership approach.
“We are excited to have Andy on board as our superintendent,” Guertin said. “His prior experiences and excitement for the position will make him a great fit for our district. We are eager to sit down with Andy to discuss our district goals so we can continue to grow our school and support all staff and students.”
McQuillen brings a background in school leadership across multiple Iowa districts. He currently serves as high school principal at Roland-Story and previously held principal roles at Tipton Middle School and Gladbrook-Reinbeck, where he served as a 7–12 principal.
In a statement, McQuillen said he is honored to step into the role and emphasized his commitment to collaboration and student success.
“I am honored to serve as the next superintendent of the Osage and Riceville Community School Districts,” McQuillen said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to join districts with a strong tradition of supporting students, staff and community, and I look forward to building meaningful relationships across both Osage and Riceville.”
Throughout his career, McQuillen has focused on improving instruction, expanding career and technical education opportunities, and supporting systems designed to meet the needs of all learners.
He began his career as a teacher and coach — experiences he said continue to shape his leadership style.
“I believe in being visible, accessible and grounded in the day-to-day work of schools,” McQuillen said. “Strong schools are built on trust, clear communication and a shared commitment to student success.”
As superintendent, McQuillen said his priorities will include advancing student achievement, supporting staff development, maintaining responsible district operations and strengthening partnerships with families and the community.
“I am excited to get started, to listen and to learn,” he said. “Together, we will build on the districts’ strengths and continue to create opportunities for every student to succeed.”
