Charles City Man Accused of Fraudulent Banking in Eastern Iowa

A Charles City man, convicted in Floyd County last year for assault, has been arrested for allegedly defrauding an eastern Iowa bank out of over $7,000.
Charles City Police say a warrant check in the 600 block of Gilbert Street, just after 12:30 am December 20, 2025, resulted in 37-year-old Cortez Jones being taken into custody. He was wanted on a Linn County warrant charging him with second-degree theft, a Class D felony.
According to the criminal complaint, Jones is accused of making several mobile deposits of checks into his account at Fairfax State Bank in Fairfax between July 11 and July 14, 2025, and subsequently either withdrawing cash or transferring money to a CashApp. The checks were later returned and found to not be valid, resulting in funds obtained from the bank of almost $7,000 in checks and over $7,200 in total funds including overdraft fees.
The bank reported they contacted Jones, who told them he would come into the bank to make a deposit and correct the overdraft but he never did.
The Linn County Sheriff’s Office determined the checks to be fraudulent, with Jones also the subject of an out-of-state forgery investigation.
He was released from the Linn County Jail December 31, 2025, after posting bail via a $5,000 surety bond.
According to court records, Jones was convicted in August 2025 in Floyd County of domestic abuse assault impeding air/blood flow, an aggravated misdemeanor. The charge stemmed from his arrest by Charles City Police last May after he was accused of squeezing a woman by the neck and shutting a door on her hand. He was sentenced to serve up to two years in prison, with all but two days suspended.
Court records show Jones was also convicted of aggravated assault in October 2018, also in Floyd County.
