Tailwater stage is 4.71 feet and has been fairly steady this past week. As of Dec. 4, the Marquette street boat ramp was free of ice; conditions may change with the freezing temperatures. The lower part of pool 16 was starting to skim over with ice. Unsafe ice conditions.

  • Bluegill – Status Unsure: Backwaters are freezing over. Unsafe ice conditions.
  • Sauger – Status Unsure: As of Dec 4th, the Marquette street ramp was open but ramp conditions may change with freezing temperatures in the forecast.
  • White Crappie – Status Unsure: Look for crappies in the backwaters and side channels around brush piles. Try vertical jigging with minnows/plastics or minnows under a bobber. Places to try are Sunset Marina and the Andalusia Island complex.

Pool 17, Mississippi River (Muscatine)

  • Ice Condition: Not Recommended
  • Water Temperature (°F): 32.0
  • Ramp Condition: Useable

Tailwater stage is 3.72 feet at Lock and Dam 16. As of Dec. 4, there was some skim ice starting to form in the main channel out from the boat ramp in Muscatine. Big Timber is frozen over with some open water around the boat ramp. Unsafe ice conditions.


Pool 18, Mississippi River (Louisa)

  • Ramp Condition: Useable

Tailwater stage is 3.73 feet at Lock and Dam 17 at New Boston. As of Dec 4th, the Toolsboro ramp was open. Ramp conditions may change with below freezing temperatures in the forecast. There was some skim ice coming down the channel that could make accessing the tailwaters difficult. The ramp has some ice on it that could make launching a boat difficult. Unsafe ice conditions.


Pool 19, Mississippi River (Lee)

Tailwater stage is 1.63 feet at Lock and Dam 18 above Burlington and has been fairly steady. We have not received any fishing report information for this pool this week. Unsafe ice conditions.


Guttenberg Management District

Backwater ice is solidifying on the upper Mississippi River; snow cover can insulate and cause thin ice. Ice thickness is up to 7-8 inches in some areas. Use caution accessing ice from shore and around stumps/trees etc. Anglers are catching good numbers of panfish and bass with some sorting needed.”Deadstick” -present live bait such as a waxworm or spike motionless a few inches off the bottom to entice lethargic fish to bite. Some anglers are walking up to Norwegian Lake. Ice is unsafe to cross to Methodist Lake. Bussey Lake – Do not access at the boat ramp due to current and unsafe ice; use Island Road.

  • Brown Trout – Good: A good trout stream doesn’t freeze in the winter because water temperatures remain above 32 degrees. Use larger flies like streamers that imitate smaller fish for a hungry brownie.
  • Rainbow Trout – Good: Area streams hold plenty of carryover trout to keep anglers busy through the off season, even with the close of the catchable trout stocking season. Use spinner baits, hair jigs, or hooks tipped with a small piece of worm, bread, or cheese floated through deeper holes.

Cedar River (above Nashua) (Floyd)

Turkey River (above Clermont) (Fayette)

Vernon Springs impoundment near Cresco is iced over. The parking lot is cleared. Use caution when going out on ice. Ice depths in areas with currents vary greatly.

Ottumwa Park Pond South (Trout Pond) (Wapello)

Thicker ice is needed for angling. Trout were stocked in early November.


Rathbun Reservoir (Appanoose)

Lake level is 904.16 msl; recreation pool is 904 msl. Lake Rathbun contains zebra mussels; clean, drain and dry your boat before going to another water body. No to very little fishing activity. The boat ramps at Prairie Ridge and Honey Creek Resort are closed. The campgrounds at Bridgeview, Prairie Ridge and Island View are closed for the season.

Hickory Grove Lake (Story)

As of Dec. 11, ice thickness is 4 inches at the South Ramp. Thickness decreases toward mid-lake and especially toward the western half of the lake where there are patches of open water.


Lake Petocka (Polk)

  • Ramp Condition: Useable

As of Dec. 11, ice anglers have been getting on the ice. Use extra caution with the variable ice thickness.

Rainbow Trout – Fair: Try jigging spoons and panfish ice jigs tipped with waxworms.


Terra Lake (Polk)

  • Ramp Condition: Useable

As of Dec. 11, ice thickness improved little from the 2 inches last week. Check ice thickness frequently.


Cold Springs Management District

Black Crappie – Status Unsure: Greenfield has a good population of 9-inch black crappie.


Lake Anita (Cass)

Waterfowl are keeping a large area open north of the beach. Ice thickness is 5 inches on the rest of the lake.

  • Black Crappie – Status Unsure: Black crappies average 9-inches.
  • Bluegill – Status Unsure: Bluegills average 8.5-inches.

Meadow Lake (Adair)

  • Ice Condition: Not Recommended
  • Ramp Condition: Useable

Ice thickness is 5 inches.

  • Black Crappie – Status Unsure: Good destination for crappie fishing this winter.
  • Bluegill – Status Unsure: Look for bluegill around the cedar tree in the lake. Fish average 8-inches.

Orient Lake (Adair)

  • Ramp Condition: Useable

Ice thickness is 4.5 inches.

  • Bluegill – Fair: Anglers are catching 8.5-inch bluegill on wax worms.

Prairie Rose Lake (Shelby)

  • Ice Condition: Not Recommended
  • Ramp Condition: Useable

Waterfowl are keeping a large area open.

  • Black Crappie – Status Unsure: Fish surveys show a good population of black crappie averaging 9-inches.
  • Bluegill – Good: Anglers report good fishing around the cedar tree piles.

Viking Lake (Montgomery)

Ice thickness is 4.5 inches.
