Greg Buenger, 62, of Charles City, passed away Friday, December 5, 2025.
A funeral service for Greg Buenger will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 11, 2025, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City with Pastor Russ Leeper officiating.
A visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home in Charles City and continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
Greg Steven Buenger, the son of Eugene and Margaret (Nitardy) Buenger, was born on February 28, 1963, in Waterloo, Iowa. Greg attended Tripoli High School and graduated in 1981. He then earned his Bachelor of Science in Organic Chemistry from Central College in 1985 and received his PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Iowa in 1990. Greg was united in marriage to Kendra Karsten on August 16, 1986, in Sumner, Iowa and to this union the couple had two children: Alex and Torey.
For 25 years, Greg worked as a chemist and, most recently, as a Group Leader at Cambrex Charles City. He previously worked at various companies in Switzerland and Kansas City. Greg was a very active member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. He served as a Sunday school teacher and then later as the Church Council President from 2020-2022.
Greg loved to spend time outdoors, whether it was sitting around a campfire or spending time on his family farm in St. Ansgar. He was an avid runner, participating in many half and full marathons, Tough Mudders, and Market to Market Relays. He enjoyed reading, traveling, frequenting breweries, and doing the daily Wordle. He also enjoyed working with his hands and crafted a Christmas display in his yard every year. Above everything, Greg loved his family, especially his granddaughter, and will be dearly missed by all his family and friends.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Kendra Buenger; son, Alex (Maggie) Buenger of Hudson, Ohio; daughter, Torey (Corbin) Horner and granddaughter, Kinsley Horner of Otsego, Minnesota; mother, Margaret Buenger of Tripoli; and two brothers, Jim (Kim) Buenger of Sheldon and Mark Buenger of Elk Point, South Dakota; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other loving family members.
He was preceded in death by his father, Eugene Buenger; paternal grandparents, Marie and Otto Buenger; and maternal grandparents, Marie and Rudolph Nitardy.
