Pheasant Season Safety Advice for Hunters, Non-Hunters

Pheasant hunting season in Iowa is set to open over the next two weekends.

That’s Heidi Reams, naturalist with Floyd County Conservation, who also cautions non-hunters out hiking or taking in the fall colors to be safe.

Reams also reminds hunters to really look before you fire your gun.

This year marks the 100th year of pheasant hunting in Iowa. The Iowa DNR says the first season was held October 20-22, 1925, when 13 counties in north central Iowa were opened to pheasant hunting that first season. Hunters were allowed a three-rooster limit for a half-day of hunting, with an estimated 75,000 hunters participating.
