New Charles City School Mascot Still Needs a Name

Earlier this year, the newly formed Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at Charles City Middle and High School announced plans to purchase a new mascot costume.
During Monday (09.08) night’s School Board meeting, students reported that their fundraising efforts paid off—covering the entire $8,000 cost.
The new Comet mascot has already been roaming around different school athletic events, albeit in complete anonymity.
Activities Director Dana Sullivan added that since the committee did the legwork to get the new costume paid for, they’ve earned the right to name the new Comet mascot.
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee was formed, in part, in response to a July 2022 Charles City home softball game in which some Waterloo East players said they were subjected to racial taunts by fans in the stands. Some fans asked to leave before play resumed.
Sullivan says the committee’s goals include changing the sportsmanship culture towards rooting for the Comets, as opposed to rooting against the opponent.
