Area Police Departments Offer Safety Tips for Back-to-School Pics, Riding School Bus

It’s back to school this Monday (08.25) across Iowa and the Charles City Police Department is offering tips for first-day school picture sharing.

In a video posted on the CCPD Facebook page, Community Resource Officer Duana Ollendick urges parents to keep things generic.

Ollendick encourages taking control of who can access your kids pics.

From the Cresco Police Department:

Monday is the first day of school, you’re excited to take your first day of school photos, but have you ever thought of the information that posting back to school photos can reveal to those on your social media?

Think before you post: Make sure to not post any school names, ages, teacher’s name and grade, any identifying features of your child (such as height, weight, etc.) or anything that could lead to any personal information that may be used for passwords. Also be mindful of posting anything that may contain your house number or identifying factors in where you live.

We like to think that our social media accounts are safe, but truthfully, we never know who may get ahold of the images that are posted of your children.

Think before you post!

Osage Police offer these back-to-school reminders for bus safety.

Safety Reminders for Parents & Students:
• Arrive at the bus stop five minutes early.
• Stand at least 5 giant steps (10 feet) away from the edge of the road.
• Wait until the bus stops, the door opens, and the driver says it’s okay before stepping onto the bus.
• Be careful that clothing with drawstrings and book bags with straps or dangling objects do not get caught in the handrail or door when exiting the bus.
• Walk in front of the bus; never walk behind the bus.
• Be sure the bus driver can always see you, and you can see the bus driver.
• Before crossing the street, stop and look left-right-left before crossing.
