James “Jim” E. Budwig, 81, of Charles City

James “Jim” E. Budwig, 81, peacefully departed this life to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on June 18, 2025, at his home in Charles City, Iowa.

A Celebration of Life for Jim Budwig will be held at Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home at a later date.

Jim was born on January 3, 1944, in Charles City to Herbert and Katherine “Katie” (Smith) Budwig. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1963, and following graduation, Jim signed up to serve his country in the United States Navy. During his military service, Jim earned the distinguished honor of becoming a Golden Shellback by crossing the equator at the 180th meridian, a testament to his adventurous spirit. He was a proud Veteran of the Vietnam War.

Following his service, Jim met the love of his life, Judith Ann Jacobsen. They were married on September 16, 1972, and together, Jim and Judy made their home in Colwell, Iowa, where they spent the next 50 years building their life and raising their two children.  During that time, Jim worked as a welder at Hydrotile in Nashua, Iowa, and later as a member of the Charles City School District staff until his retirement. He and Judy were members of the Colwell United Church of Christ, and both enjoyed gardening, bird watching, and spending time outdoors.

After Judy passed in 2023, Jim moved from the family home in Colwell to the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home, where he was affectionately known as “Cowboy Jim” and where he made many new friends amongst the residents and staff.

Throughout his life, Jim had a unique ability to make everyone he talked to feel special.  His kindhearted and generous nature granted him the opportunity to develop many friendships over the years. That same spirit was displayed in his lifelong love for his pets, which ranged from cats and chickens to turkeys and even a pet goat.

Jim is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Judy; his parents; his brother, Herbert Jr; and nieces, Holly and Lisa. Jim is survived by his children Katie (Aaron) Kelly and Jacob Budwig; grandchildren Avery and Clay; many nieces and nephews; and many friends who will carry his memory, joyful spirit, and unforgettable laugh in their hearts.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to the family or that donations be made in his honor to the Colwell Fire Department and First Responders.

Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home, (641) 228-2323, 1205 South Main Street, Charles City, Iowa 50616 is in charge of local arrangements.  Online condolences may be left on the Tribute Wall for the family at www.hauserfh.com.

Chris Berg

Chris was born in Webster City and raised in Charles City, which basically means he’s been corn‑fed and radio‑bred since day one. As a kid, he was always caught singing along to the radio — and while he’ll tell you he’s great at karaoke, let’s just say the audience’s ears often file a noise complaint. When he’s not busy butchering ‘80s power ballads, Chris enjoys starting overly ambitious home projects that rarely make it past the “great idea” stage. He lives in Charles City with his endlessly patient wife Vicki and their kids, Brynlee and Jaxon, who have already perfected the art of the eye‑roll every time Dad cracks another “dad joke.”
