Charles City to Mark Tornado Anniversary with “Day of Service”
Thursday (05.15) will mark the 57th anniversary of the tornado that devastated Charles City on May 15, 1968.
Charles City Chamber Executive Director Mark Wicks says Main Street Charles City is leading the charge to commemorate the infamous weather event in a more positive light.
Wicks says there will be an organized cleanup in downtown Charles City from 4:30 to 6 pm Thursday, with participants asked to bring brooms and leaf blowers. But what you can do to serve your community doesn’t end there.
Businesses are encouraged to get involved as well by cleaning up storefronts and entrances and/or washing windows.
A list of possible activities on how you can participate in Thursday’s “Day of Service” in Charles City is included below.

A suggested list of possible Day of Service activities from Main Street Charles City includes, but is not limited to:
- Cleanup your storefront, front and rear entrances
- Wash your business windows – all floors
- Wash your neighbor’s windows (with permission) if they are unable
- Cleanup along the community recreational trail
- Park cleanup – any and all parks in town
- Parking lot cleanup (Adopt-A-Lot)
- Riverbank cleanup
- Help clean up a neighbor’s yard if they can’t (with permission)
- Take a neighbor to the store or run errands if they need assistance
- Clean up around the bushes along Gilbert Street
- Clean up around your family cemetery sites
- Help wash barrels, banners and wagons for Party in the Park season prep at 5 p.m.
- Group cleanup of downtown sidewalks, driveways and Central Park between 4:30-6 p.m.
