Early Morning Fire Destroys House Just Northwest of Charles City

An early morning fire Thursday (03.13) has destroyed a house just northwest of Charles City.
The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office says they responded to the fire at 1828 Cedar View Road, shortly after 2 am Thursday. Fire crews from the Floyd, Charles City, Colwell and Rudd fire departments battled the blaze, which left the home a total loss.
AMR Ambulance and Floyd County Search and Rescue were also on scene.
An online search through the Floyd County Assessor showed the property is owned by Ralph McCartney and David McCartney, who is a former employee of KCHA radio.
David McCartney confirmed in a Facebook post the house was that of his late mother, Rhoda McCartney, and “thankfully it was unoccupied so there are no injuries or worse.”
McCartney adds that the Floyd Fire Chief Ben Chatfield said the structure was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived and speculated the fire may have been caused by faulty electrical wiring, though it’s too soon to tell.
McCartney says he’s very grateful for friends who have reached out and noted that he is fortunate to have removed family photos and mementos this winter ahead of the estate sale that was being planned for May.
