Three People Killed in Weekend Head-On Collision in North Iowa

A Florida husband and wife were among three people killed in a weekend wrong way collision in North Iowa.

The Iowa State Patrol (ISP) says the wreck occurred shortly before 9 am Saturday (12.28) morning near mile marker 24 on Interstate 35, about 15 miles north of Clear Lake. A car, driven by 83-year-old Leonard Lilyholm of Palm Beach, Florida, was southbound when it crossed the median and continued going south in the northbound lanes of I-35.  The car crashed head-on with a northbound pickup driven by 41-year-old Bradley Vonnahme of Coon Rapids, Iowa.

The ISP says Lilyholm and his wife, 82-year-old Carol Lilyholm, along with Vonnahme, were killed in the crash. Four other passengers, including a 6 year-old, were  taken to MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City for treatment of injuries.

The Worth County Sheriff’s Office, Forest City Ambulance, Northwood First Responders and Ambulance, Fertile and Hanlontown fire departments, the Iowa DNR, and the Iowa DOT assisted at the scene.
