City of Charles City Plays Waiting Game on $18 Million EPA Grant Application

The City of Charles City now plays the waiting game in the wake of its application for a “Community Change” grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

That’s Mayor Dean Andrews, who says getting the City’s application ready took a group effort.

Andrews says they also enlisted some outside help to put their “best foot” forward.

The City first began exploring an EPA grant to make upgrades to the Charles City Whitewater Course on the Cedar River. However, Andrews notes that they needed to expand the scope of their application to improve their chances of approval.

He says the list of needs the City could address with the $18 million grant also includes improvements for walkability, such as the installation of sidewalks where they’re currently lacking, as well as the ped mall between City Hall and the Charles City Public Library.

Andrews says it will likely be early 2025 before the EPA approves the next round of grants.
