City of New Hampton Wrestles with $45 Million in Infrastructure Upgrades

The Iowa DNR has mandated that the City of New Hampton have a new wastewater treatment plant in operation by the year 2036.
In early November, the City Council approved a contract for engineering services to design the facility, estimated to cost about $33 million. The City hopes to have it operational by 2029.
Mayor Steve Geerts says they also hope to address other needs, from a new tanker truck for the fire department to street, storm sewer and parking lot repairs. The infrastructure wish list doesn’t end there.
Geerts says the City would like to address all those items together.
Geerts says they would prefer to finance those projects with one bond because costs will only increase if the City waits any longer than it already has.
Geerts adds that work continues on determining increases in water and sewer rates to help “bank” funding for the new wastewater treatment plant.
