Charles City Varsity Girls Basketball Season Canceled

Charles City has canceled its varsity girls basketball schedule for the 2024-25 school year.
Activities Director Dana Sullivan says, “This is a decision we have thought a lot about and have had many discussions around for quite some time. The end goal is to build our athletes’ skills and confidence to return to a varsity schedule next year (2025-26).”
Sullivan adds the Comets will play a JV-level schedule with the possibility of freshman-level games when teams are available. Most games will be played prior to varsity boys basketball games to “showcase the girls (basketball players) we have in an environment they deserve.”
While Charles City varsity girls basketball teams have struggled in recent years, Sullivan says that doesn’t define the program and the decision to cancel this season is “not a reflection on our current athletes, former athletes or coaching staff.”
Sullivan says the school has already been in communication with the commissioner of the North Central Conference to confirm they will have a girls varsity basketball schedule next year (2025-2026) when the Comets join the NCC.
