City of Charles City Shorted $500K with Pure Prairie Poultry Closure

Less than two years after they began operations, a Charles City chicken plant is out of business.
Pure Prairie Poultry (PPP) ceased operations last Wednesday (10.02) after efforts to reorganize under Chapter 11 Bankruptcy were challenged by dozens of creditors owed between $100 million and $500 million combined. That total includes a half-million dollars to the City of Charles City.
That’s Mayor Dean Andrews, who explains that the City’s financial involvement with PPP ends there.
Andrews says what happens next with the plant is the big question, but a lot could be decided as Pure Prairie works through bankruptcy proceedings, although the company is also actively seeking buyers of the facility.
City Administrator Steve Diers gave the City Council an update Monday (10.07) night.
PPP’s closing puts some 138 workers out of jobs.
