Repaving Timeline for Charles City Main Street Rehab Coming Into Focus

The timeline is starting to become more “concrete” for the repaving of North Main Street in Charles City as part of a $2 million rehabilitation project.
Mayor Dean Andrews says the first pavement to be laid down will allow the intersection of North Main and North Grand Avenue to reopen this month with a redesign that will make turning at that corner safer for drivers.
Before the bulk of the paving of Main Street can begin at the Floyd County Courthouse and head north, Andrews says there’s still a couple of blocks of curb and gutter work to finish.
The City has decided not to pave the Main Street Bridge, with its life expectancy cut shorter following flooding in June, which bombarded the almost 115-year-old structure with trees and debris from the swollen Cedar River.
The bridge had to be closed for over two weeks until inspectors could check on any damages. When it was approved for reopening, the City was advised to put a weight limit of 28-tons on the bridge.
Andrews says the bridge will likely need to be replaced in about 10 years.
