Installation of Speed Cameras in Charles City “Stuck In Park”
Implementation of speed cameras in Charles City is “stuck in park.â€
Police Chief Hugh Anderson says installation by the speed camera company has been held up at the State level as the City awaits DOT approval of their permit.
It was hoped the devices would be up and running in January, but Anderson says they remain in a holding pattern. Once they are in operation, Anderson also notes that the State, not the City, benefits more from any ticket fines.
And, while some speed violators might still think the City is after their money, Anderson says the speed cameras are largely about safety.
When the speed cameras are put into service, violators will get warnings initially before tickets are issued for driving 10 mph or more over the posted speed limit.
Speed cameras will be placed at the Charley Western Trail crossings on South Grand Avenue, Highway 14, and on Gilbert Street.Â
