Chickasaw County Supervisors Contemplate Hiring Freeze, Wages

Employment issues headlined this week’s (12.26) meeting of the Chickasaw County Board of Supervisors.
With the budgeting process for the 2024-25 fiscal year to ramp up in January, Supervisors, including Jacob Hackman, weighed the possibility of a hiring freeze due to uncertainty of available revenue.Â
The Board took no action on a hiring freeze, but the consensus was that departments can fill current openings already in their budget.
Supervisors also heard wage increase recommendations from the County Compensation Board, with member Michael Kennedy expressing concern over giving more than just nominal raises for positions like County Sheriff Ryan Shawver and County Attorney David Laudner.
Kennedy voiced similar concerns about the Sheriff’s department.
The Compensation Board proposed a 9% increase for elected officials including attorney, auditor, treasurer, recorder and sheriff. They also suggest a 3.2% cost-of-living pay bump for Supervisors, who have already vowed they would not take a pay raise, continuing a trend in recent years.
Supervisors took no action on the Compensation Board wage proposals.
