Charles City School Board Approves New Substitute Teacher Pay Rates

The Charles City School District is adjusting the way they compensate substitute teachers to start the 2023-24 school year.

In May of 2022, the Charles City School Board approved retention bonuses for substitutes, who could earn an extra $500 for every 30 days worked. It was also capped at $1,000.

The School Board recently approved new substitute teachers’ pay rates recommended by Superintendent Dr. Anne Lundquist.

Lundquist says the new pay rates will save the school district money but still allow substitute teachers to enhance their income.

Like the COVID-paid $500 bonuses, the district hopes the new compensation plan will keep them competitive with other schools still looking to address a substitute teacher shortage brought on by the pandemic.
