Former ABC TV Reporter Recalls Covering Infamous 1968 Charles City

Monday (05.15) marks the 55-year anniversary of the tornado that devastated Charles City on May 15, 1968.

Former ABC television reporter Brian Ross was just 19-years-old when he went into action to cover the tornado that day while working for KCHA.

Once inside, Ross says every staff member then headed for safety.

Even though he was a young reporter at the time, Ross says he and co-workers understood the important role KCHA would play in its aftermath.

Ross also noted that prior to heading for cover inside the radio station, he left a tape recorder running outside in hopes of capturing the vicious sounds of the tornado as it passed by. However, he says that tape recorder was never seen again.
