Floyd County Veterans Memorial to Get Landscaping Enhancement

The Floyd County Veterans Memorial at the Floyd County Courthouse is getting a makeover.

The Board of Supervisors this week approved a design plan recommended by the Veterans Memorial Committee to enhance the landscaping around the memorial. However, District 2 resident, and veteran, Dennis White challenged the proposed project because he didn’t feel it honored the memorial’s current design and that the Veterans Committee should have sought more input.

His representative on the Board, Supervisor Dennis Keifer, didn’t side with that assessment.

Supervisor Jim Jorgensen concurred with Keifer’s opinion, adding he wondered how the committee would feel if the Board didn’t follow their recommendation, since that was their purpose.

Supervisor Mark Kuhn recognized White’s passion for the memorial.

The Board voted 3-0 to accept the Veterans Memorial Committee design, giving the go-ahead for Otto’s Oasis of Charles City to add landscaping to the memorial, estimated to cost about $9,000.

The project calls flowers, plants and greenery to outline the memorial from Main Street up to the Courthouse steps.
