May is National Youth Traffic Safety Month

In a month filled with proms and high school graduations, May is designated National Youth Traffic Safety Month.

Trooper Tom Williams with the Mason City District office of the Iowa State Patrol says the numbers back up the need for increased awareness on the road by younger drivers.

Williams adds that the numbers within those numbers are more dire for the youngest drivers.

Williams calls on parents to help bridge the experience gap for younger drivers.

Williams says he thinks the movement of driver’s ed instruction from the classroom to online also limits real experience for younger drivers. He notes that as public information officer, he used to provide in-class instruction to a host of schools. He now only has two schools remaining, with the COVID pandemic playing a key role in that shift.
