City of Charles City Flushing Water Distribution System

The CHARLES CITY WATER DEPARTMENT has began flushing the water distribution system on May 1st and is expected to finish by May 29th.

A City Facebook notification says, “Annual flushing of the hydrants is necessary to remove any deposits that may build up on the interior walls of the underground water mains. This process ensures that water quality is maintained throughout the system.  Customers may experience fluctuations in pressure and/or discoloration of their water during flushing.”

The flushing also allows the Department to operate all fire hydrants in the distribution system and identify any maintenance requirements for each fire hydrant on an individual basis.

If you experience discolored water, run your cold water tap until it clears.  During periods of discoloration, postpone washing clothes and limit your use of hot water.  Any issues should be resolved in a short time.

Contact the Water Department at 641-257-6315 if you have any questions or concerns
