17-Year-Old Could Serve Up to 25 Years in Prison for Waverly Sexual Assault

A juvenile male who sexually assaulted a teenage girl in north Iowa almost a year ago could serve up to 25 years in prison.

Chad Chapline was 17 when he was arrested last May for holding a female victim hostage and sexually assaulting her in a treehouse in southwest Waverly. Authorities say he also threatened the girl with a knife while holding her captive for almost 48 hours. Another 15-year-old male was also involved in the sexual assault.

In January, Chapline pleaded to guilty to second-degree sexual abuse, a Class B felony. On Monday (04.24),  he was sentenced in Bremer County District Court.

Chapline will go to prison for a term not to exceed 25 years and must serve at least one-third of the maximum indeterminate term of his sentence before he will be eligible for parole or work release.  Under a special sentence due to the nature of Chapline’s sexual crimes against the victim, he is also committed to the custody of the Iowa Department of Corrections for life, with eligibility for parole as provided in Iowa Code chapter 906.

Chapline, who will turn 18 on May 1st, was convicted for false imprisonment of his victim in juvenile court.
