Weekend Snowfall Totals Increased Closer to Mississippi River
The National Weather Service in Lacrosse is reporting snowfall totals in northeast Iowa increased for areas closer to the Mississippi River from a weather system that moved through the region Sunday into Monday morning.
The storm left behind 8 inches of snow at Churchtown in Allamakee County as well as Elkader and Monona in Clayton County. Snowfall measured from 6 to 7.5 inches in and around Decorah. Wadena in Fayette County got 6 inches.
Snowfall totals fell off farther from the Mississippi River, with 3 inches in New Hampton and 1 inch in Nashua. No measurable snowfall was recorded in Charles City.Â
The NWS notes the winter weather came on the heels of record-breaking warmth in the days prior, when temperatures were in the 80s Tuesday through Thursday but plummeted into Sunday, with rain changing to snow in the afternoon.
Western into central Wisconsin was hit the hardest with some areas seeing snow amounts near 20 inches. Tree damage, some power outages, and numerous auto accidents were also caused by the weather.
