Before/After School Program Could “Hit” New Hampton Baseball

A joint effort to establish a before and after school program for three- and four-year-olds in New Hampton means the Chickasaws’ baseball program will take a “hit.”

The New Hampton School District is teaming up with Little Sprouts Children’s Center for the program to be housed in the former Middle School building, where the weight room will be remodeled to accommodate about 55 kids.

During their April meeting Monday night, the School Board held a public hearing on the project, during which New Hampton City Councilman Cory McDonald applauded the Board for addressing the City’s need for more child care. McDonald is also head coach for the Chickasaws baseball program, which will take a “hit” because of the remodel.

McDonald reiterated that the baseball issue is small in comparison to the need for more daycare in the community.  (Wednesday, Superintendent Jay Jurrens told KCHA/KCZE a solution for the baseball team was in the works.)

No action was taken on the project by the Board Monday, but Superintendent Jay Jurrens informed the Board that three companies attended a bid meeting Monday morning for the remodel, estimated to cost around $200,000, with the school district contributing $100,000 spread out over a five-year period. Little Sprouts will cover the remaining costs.

The goal is to have the before and after school wraparound program up and running with the start of next school year.
