Chickasaw County, City of New Hampton Officials Consider Jail Options

A new Chickasaw County Jail with just the basics could cost upwards of $13.2 million.

In a joint meeting this week, the Chickasaw County Board of Supervisors and the New Hampton City Council heard different options for replacing the current aging county jail. The County and City are sharing the costs of a jail feasibility study by The Samuels Group.

Greg Wilde is the company’s business development manager. He says state inspectors have been advising the County to look at replacing the County jail for at least 10 years.

While a joint law enforcement center would be ideal, the general consensus would be for a new County jail facility with a booking area and holding cells to meet the safety requirements for inmates and staff. The cost is estimated at $13.2 million, a price that Samuels Group President Sid Samuels will only go up the longer the project is put off.

No decision on how to proceed with possible jail replacement was made during the meeting, but building a new jail would likely mean a bond referendum.

Wilde says the Samuels Group has a 100% success rate in getting bond referendums passed the first time, which included the bond measure for the new Floyd County Jail in Charles City and renovations to the Floyd County Courthouse.
