Iowa DCI Assists with Investigation of North Iowa Inmate Death

State officials are helping with the investigation into the death of a north Iowa jail inmate.

A statement from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) says, “At approximately 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, Cerro Gordo County Jail staff discovered jail inmate Lamar Anderson unresponsive in his cell. Life saving measures were initiated and Anderson was transported to MercyOne (Medical Center) Hospital in Mason City, where he was pronounced dead.”

The media release adds that “the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office has asked the DCI to conduct an independent investigation into Anderson’s death. The Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner has performed an autopsy. Results of the autopsy are pending toxicology. The investigation is on-going.”

Court records show the 53-year-old Anderson was serving a 30-day jail sentence for driving while barred, for which he has been convicted three times in the last two years.
