Arlene (Beck) Thomas, 89, of Charles City, passed away Tuesday, December 13, 2022, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City, Iowa.
A funeral service for Arlene Thomas will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 15, 2022, at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City with Pastor Russ Leeper officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.
Visitation will be at Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, and will continue one hour before the service at the church on Thursday.
Arlene Mary (Beck) Thomas was born on December 2, 1933, to Cecil C. and Mary G. (Auchstetter) Beck in Charles City. She graduated from Charles City High School in 1953 and from Iowa State Teachers College in 1955. She taught kindergarten in Greene from 1955 to 1958. On August 4, 1956, Arlene was united in marriage to Charles D. Thomas, after seven years of dating her high school sweetheart, at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. Her employment was interrupted for 10 years while establishing their family of four children. Arlene picked up her passion of teaching for 22 more years, from 1968 to 1991 at Central School Nursery in Charles City, dedicating her time as a fulltime wife, mother, pre-school teacher and volunteer. She was an active member and volunteer of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, YMCA, Scouts, PTA, Camp Director for Disabled Children, Charles City Arts Council, City Improvement Association, PEO, as well as Co- Facilitator of the Charles City Alzheimer’s Support Group for 20 years.
Arlene is survived by daughters: Jayne (Rick) Hall and Barbara (David) Litterer; sons: Scott (Marcia) Thomas and Steven Thomas; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Virgil Beck; and sister, Shirley (Leon) Hall.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles D. Thomas on 11/21/15; great-grandchild, Gracelyn Joy (Jackson & Hannah) Litterer on 08/11/21; and many family members and friends.
