Waverly Police Investigate Assault Involving Juvenile

Authorities are investigating an assault last week at a northeast Iowa high school.

The Waverly Police Department says officers responded to an assault at  Waverly-Shell Rock Senior High School shortly before 6 p.m. last Wednesday evening. Upon arrival, police identified the individuals involved, interviewed witnesses, and spoke with school staff.

On Friday, Waverly Police Department referred a 17-year-old male to Juvenile Court Services for assault causing bodily injury, a serious misdemeanor. The juvenile was booked and released at the Bremer County Jail.

A Facebook post from Chief Richard Pursell about the investigation reads, “To clarify misinterpretations and rumors – When the Waverly Police Department arrived on the scene, the assault had concluded. The victim was brought to the training room and was being cared for by W-SR staff.”

The post also notes that school staff “did place pads from their defibrillator on the individual, but only to monitor until Emergency Services arrived. The defibrillator was never needed and was done only as a precaution by W-SR staff.”
