Possible Bond Referendum for Charles City High School Remodeling Moves Forward

A $27 million bond referendum to pay for upgrades and remodeling at Charles City High School is still alive.

During their regular meeting Monday night, the School Board voted 4-to-1 to approve preliminary plans and cost estimates for the “Project Scope” high school facilities plan authored by Invision Architecture and Estes Construction.

Invision’s Brad Leeper told the board they have received lots of community input for what he now terms the “Revitalize Plan.”

Leeper says constituents also want enhanced security measures, a new concept for the building’s famous circles and a performing arts auditorium.

Superintendent Dr. Anne Lundquist acknowledged the concerns that come with the remodeling approach to the High School.

Lundquist also noted that Charles City High School is a sturdy building that was here eight years before the infamous tornado of 1968.

Dr. David Schrodt cast the lone “no” vote against continuing the process towards putting a bond referendum before voters, which could be this March at the earliest.
