Temporary Beef Import Quota Falls Short Of Target

If you’ve been keeping an eye on cattle markets, recent figures show that foreign beef imports under the temporary tariff-rate quota came in well below expectations—offering little to no relief for grocery shoppers.
Out of the 100,000 metric tons permitted for September, under 38,000 actually entered the U.S., and economists note that very little of that was truly “new” beef. Analyses from the American Farm Bureau and university experts confirm that retail ground beef prices held firm across the country, showing no noticeable drop.
For Iowa producers, the bottom line is clear: despite record import quotas, tight domestic cattle supplies and steady consumer demand continue to keep beef prices elevated. Iowa farm groups are keeping a close watch as the next quota windows open.
