China Trade Uncertainty Adds Pressure to U.S. Soybean Markets

Iowa soybean growers are feeling the squeeze this harvest as surging national yield estimates and ongoing trade uncertainty with China weigh on crop prices.
Following the USDA’s October report, soybean futures slipped after national production was revised up to 4.562 billion bushels—boosting expected yields to 53.1 bushels per acre. While the USDA did raise projected exports by 10 million bushels, Iowa producers remain vulnerable to shifting trade relations. Because China is the primary driver of foreign demand, local elevator cash prices react instantly to every headline on buying commitments and tariffs.
With projected farm prices averaging $12.20 per bushel and ending stocks rising, Iowa farmers finishing up the fall harvest are keeping a sharp focus on export sales to see where their bottom line lands.
