China Buying Helps U.S. Soybean Export Sales Surge

As the nation’s second-largest soybean producer, Iowa stands to directly benefit from a recent surge in global demand, offering local producers strong market support right in the middle of fall harvest.
A significant weekly jump in U.S. soybean sales—driven largely by Chinese buyers who accounted for over half of the 1.03 million metric tons sold—helps absorb Iowa’s heavy harvest volume and fortifies crop prices. With total national sales commitments for the 2026–27 marketing year nearly doubling year-over-year, Iowa grain elevators and growers are seeing a noticeably stronger export backdrop compared to last fall.
However, the news is a mixed bag for local operations: weekly corn export sales fell 36% to 536,000 metric tons, presenting potential headwinds for Iowa’s corn producers who may need to rely more heavily on local grain storage and domestic processing options until feed and ethanol demand pick back up.
