Made of Steel

President Donald Trump unveiled plans on Monday for a new $15 billion steel plant set for construction in Iowa.

Speaking alongside Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, company CEO Joe Broking, and various industry leaders in the Oval Office, Trump highlighted the domestic focus of the project, noting that the steel would be completely mined, processed, and produced within the United States. White House officials noted that the facility will produce specialized high-grade steel to meet requirements for the U.S. defense sector.

The project relies on a newly developed mine in Minnesota, supported by a $2.5 billion investment, which is scheduled to begin operations shortly. According to administration officials, that mining operation is expected to yield approximately 7.5 million tons of iron annually and generate roughly 350 local jobs—marking the first new domestic iron ore mine established in over half a century.

This major economic announcement arrives just weeks prior to the 2026 midterm elections, directly impacting a crucial political battleground for congressional control.
