Persistence is Key

A northwest Iowa cattle producer says perseverance is mandatory for young people hoping to create a future in the beef industry.

Craig Moss, a fifth-generation farmer, oversees his family’s day-to-day operations, says, “Doing your homework as far managing risk has probably been the biggest thing for us that has been successful. I say that now, and the market has downturned and I may or may not be on the wrong side of that deal. That knife cuts both ways.”

Moss, who currently serves as president of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, says a strong support system is critical. “Having a good team behind you as far as professionals whether it’s nutritionists and veterinarians, but especially a good banker.”

He says family support has played a big role in his farm’s success. “My wife and I certainly want to be farming and raising our kids in that lifestyle, but we’re also farming because my parents want us to be farming. They’ve done a great job of supporting us and making that happen.”
