Robert “Rob” McMurchy, a lifelong farmer, devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on September 16, 2026, at the age of 86.
A funeral service for Rob McMurchy will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 21, 2026, at Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home. A private family burial will be at Howardville Cemetery north of Floyd.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the start of the service at the funeral home on Monday.
He was born on November 16, 1939, to Dan and Dorothy (Moore) McMurchy. His uncle, Ron McMurchy, who lived with the family, also played an important role in his upbringing
Robert grew up on his family’s farm and learned early the value of hard work, responsibility, and respect for the land. He graduated from Floyd High School in 1957 and continued working on the family farm through high school and throughout his life.
In March 1963, Robert was drafted into the United States Army and was stationed in Colorado. He served his country honorably until his discharge in 1965. During his time in the Army, he discovered a love for the mountains. The beauty and freedom of the mountains stayed with him throughout his life, and he often dreamed of living among them. Ultimately, his love for his family, his roots, and the family farm drew him home.
Robert dedicated his life to farming the family’s century-plus farm, raising cattle and growing grain. He loved animals and found purpose in the daily work and responsibility that came with farm life. One of his greatest joys was farming alongside his son, Tim, for many years.
On June 8, 1968, Robert married his soulmate, Barb McDermott. They shared 58 years of marriage, building a life filled with love, family, hard work, and countless memories. They stood side by side through all of life’s joys and challenges, including Robert’s ten-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Robert was a loving father to Tim, Dean, and Jodi. He was a proud grandfather to Austin and Morgan (Tim), and Ben and Olivia (Jodi). He took great pride in his family and passed on lessons that would remain with his children throughout their lives, especially the importance of hard work, dedication, and loyalty.
Robert’s interests and hobbies reflected his curiosity, independence, and adventurous spirit. He enjoyed traveling to the Boundary Waters, fishing in Canada, traveling west on his motorcycle, and fixing up wrecked cars. You could often find him tinkering in his shop, working on a project, or finding something to repair.
Robert is survived by his wife, Barb; his children, Tim McMurchy (Tina), Dean McMurchy (Amy), and Jodi Schafer (Brian); his grandchildren, Austin, Morgan, Ben, and Olivia; and his sister, Margaret (Wayne) Schumacher.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dan and Dorothy, his brother, John, and his aunts and uncles.
The family extends its sincerest thank you to the staff at 9th Street Chautauqua and St. Croix Hospice for providing exceptional care and comfort to Robert and his family during his final months.
