Charles City Chicken Ordinance Gets Reconsideration by City Council

It’s “Buck, Buck, Buck, Baaaaaack.”

An ordinance to allow residents to own chickens within the City limits of Charles City is getting a second run when the City Council meets Wednesday (Sept. 9) night in regular session.

The ordinance got “cooped up” last month, failing to advance following a 2-2 vote among the City Council members who were present. The swing vote would’ve been Councilwoman Krista Noah, but she was on vacation and not available. Still, she pushed to bring it back for reconsideration.

Council members Phil Knighten and Phoebe Pittman were also in favor of giving the ordinance a try, with Jeff Otto and Patrick Lumley opposed, citing the nuisance potential.

After the measure died on that 2-2 vote, the Council must restart the process for possible passage, which would require Council approval of three readings of the ordinance. The first of which is Wednesday night when the Council convenes at 6 PM at City Hall.

Community members who wish to share their comments may attend in-person, or remotely via Zoom, with connection information included with a post on the City of Charles City Facebook page.

The City notes that Zoom is available for public comment only and will not provide a live broadcast of the meeting. A live broadcast will be available on the City’s YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@CityofCharlesCity50616/streams
