NIHRC to Mark International Overdose Awareness Day Monday (Aug. 31) in Mason City

The North Iowa Harm Reduction Coalition (NIHRC) will host a public observance for International Overdose Awareness Day from 6 to 8 PMMonday (Aug. 31) at Central Park in downtown Mason City.
The annual event honors lives lost to overdose, supports grieving families, and connects North Iowa residents with lifesaving community resources. Attendees can engage with local organizations specializing in substance use recovery, mental health support, and harm reduction tools.
Sam Severson, Disease Prevention Nurse at CG Public Health and member of the NIHRC said, “Overdose impacts families across every neighborhood in North Iowa, and no one should navigate loss or recovery in isolation. This evening is dedicated to honoring those we have lost, breaking down the stigma that keeps people from seeking help, and offering real support and compassion to our community.”
Following the resource fair, organizers will lead a public reading of names to honor individuals who have died from an overdose. The event will also feature a shared community meal to foster open conversation, concluding with a silent walk through Central Park in unified remembrance and hope.
