Home Gardeners & Harvest Time

August is flying by and with that comes excitement for home gardeners as produce beings to mature. The proper timing for harvest not only ensures ripeness and flavor but in turn promotes more production. Here are some tips for specific vegetables that could be found in your garden.
Picking tomatoes when they are fully uniform in color is a strategy some home gardeners like to follow. However, there are some, like me, who like to pick their tomatoes when they begin the breaker stage.
Peppers, sweet or spicy, offer gardeners flexibility at harvest. Pick peppers that are firm and the appropriate size for the variety.
Summer and winter squash require very different approaches. Zucchini and other summer squash are best harvested at about 6 to 12 inches long and around 2 inches in diameter. Winter squash should remain on the vine until fully mature. Harvest winter squash with about 1 inch of stem attached.
Follow some of these practices and you should have plenty of ripe fruits and vegetables for your harvest season.
