Another Main Intersection in Charles City Impacted by Construction

For the third week in a row, a main traffic intersection in Charles City is being impacted by constriction.

Street Superintendent Cory Spieker says the temporary traffic signal at the corner of South Main and Gilbert Street has been removed to begin the process of installing the new permanent light. He says crews will pour footing and do underground electrical Tuesday and then return in the next few weeks to install the new traffic control light.

The previous permanent traffic signal had to be removed earlier this year after it had been struck so many times by vehicles, the base had become unstable. With the temporary traffic signal removed temporarily, a four-way stop sign has been placed at the center of the intersection.

Last week, construction to add the new career academy onto the south side of the existing Charles City NIACC Center, just east of Hy-Vee, meant the closure of Clark Street from the Highway 18/Brantingham Street intersection west to Chapel Lane. Spieker says that project could wrap up Tuesday afternoon or could last until early Thursday.

Three weeks ago, the intersection at Highway 18 and North Grand Avenue in Charles City was closed for almost a week as crews repaired a collapsed sewer line.
