Safe Harvest Season on Iowa’s Roads: Roles for Motorists & Farmers

The latest Iowa Crop Progress and Condition Report from USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service shows farmers trailing behind in their crop harvesting.

As of Sunday (Oct. 11), 14% of corn has been harvested in Iowa, which is 20 percentage points behind the five-year average. Thus, there’s plenty of corn still standing that can limit visibility for motorists traveling rural areas.

That’s Pete Hjelmstad with the Iowa DOT in Mason City, who encourages motorists to do their part to aid farmers at this busy time of year.

Chickasaw County Public Health Administrator Lisa Welter also notes: a vehicle is at a disadvantage in a collision with a tractor or farm implement.

Welter also encourages safety when it’s time to pass.

Chickasaw County Sheriff Ryan Shawver says farmers can also help keep roads safe.

Soybean harvesting was also lagging behind entering the week. As of Sunday, 31% of soybeans were harvested, which is 28 percentage points behind the five-year average.
