South Winneshiek Looks Ahead to 2028-2029 School Year

Last November, voters in the South Winneshiek School District approved a $13 million bond referendum for additions to the high school in Calmar.
The building, which dates back to 1930, is in line for additional classrooms, plus new cafeteria, library, gymnasium, and a new main entrance on the north side.
Those changes are also leading to additional adjustments across the South Winn school district. A social media post by Superintendent Chris Einck explained the change that will begin with the 2028-2029 school year, when they anticipate completing the addition and renovation of the high school.
Einck says, “Beginning that school year, 7th and 8th grade students will attend the Calmar Campus, creating a 7th-12th grade building.”
He added that the move increases scheduling flexibility and expanded opportunities for our 7th and 8th grade students. By having middle school students in the same building as high school students, they’ll have greater access to Career and Technology Education courses, including Agriculture, Business Education, and Industrial Technology. Students who qualify and wish to take advanced courses, such as Algebra or Geometry, will also have the opportunity to do so with fewer scheduling limitations.
Einck says having 7th and 8th grade students and teachers closer to our 9th-12th grade teachers will allow staff to be utilized more efficiently and provide additional opportunities and support for students.
He adds that the Ossian Campus will become a Pre-K through 6th grade building, providing more space to meet the needs of students and staff.
