Farmer Mental Health IS IMPORTANT

Farmers face significantly higher rates, upwards of 2-5x greater, of stress, anxiety, depression, and suicide compared to the general population due to unique occupational pressures.

Fluctuating market prices, heavy debt, input costs, and the constant fear of losing the family farm lead to heavy financial strain. Uncontrollable factors such as unpredictable weather, natural disasters, climate change, pests, and livestock diseases that wipe out a season’s work add to the mental load. Not to mention the long, physically demanding work hours with limited social interaction and a lack of nearby rural health services.

If you or someone you know in the agricultural community is struggling, confidential help is available right now through Farm Aid’s Farmer Hotline at 1-800-FARM-AID. You can also explore local guidance from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Health and Human Sciences. The National Suicide Prevention Hotline can be reached by calling or texting 988 and the Farmer Mental Health Resilience Program, provided by Rural Minds, offers free fact sheets, educational tools, and online resources tailored to farm families and rural communities.
